Goals of the Course


  • Inform pregnant women on the  the process of pregnancy, labor and birth.
  • Provide a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Provide tools and skills to help women cope with the discomforts of childbirth.
  • Develop  labor support  skills to enable the birth partner to support the laboring woman.
  •  Empower birth partners to be strong advocates for the birthing woman and infant.
  • Inform  about the risks, benefits of  medical interventions and discuss all alternatives available.
  • Foster  self-empowerment and autonomy in decision-making around childbirth choices.
  • Improve self-confidence to give birth normally and to breastfeed suceessfully.
  • Improve parental confidence to cope with the postpartum period snd provide skills for newborn care.

Class Overview


CLASS ONE: UNDERSTANDING BIRTH


Topics Covered:


  • Conception and Fetal Growth.
  • Basic anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and childbirth.
  • The difference between prodromal and active labor.
  • Causes, consequences, signs and symptoms of premature birth and tips for reducing risk of preterm labor.
  • The three emotional signposts of labor. 
  • The six ways to progress in labor.


CLASS TWO: COPING WITH LABOR & CULTIVATING TRUST IN BIRTH


Topics Covered:


  • Tools and techniques for labor  such as vocalizing, massage, guided imagery, relaxation methods, hydrotherapy, etc.
  • How to appeal to the senses when providing labor support.
  • The benefits of having a Doula (professional labor companion) during labor.
  • The concept of the 4 Ps: The Power, The Passage, The Passenger, and The Psyche.
  • Cultivating Trust in Birth.
  • Spiritual aspects of childbirth.
  • The  role of hormones during labor and birth.
  • Positions to facilitate a more comfortable labor. 
  • Pushing positions and techniques.


CLASS THREE: OPTIONS FOR CHILDBIRTH


Topics Covered:


  • Questions to ask before accepting or declining medical procedures.
  • Understanding your rights as a childbearing person.  Informed consent and refusal.
  • Creating a “Birth Plan”.
  • Questions to ask of medical providers.
  • Values Clarification: Identifying needs for birth, care-provider, and support person.
  •  Preferences for pain medication.
  • Pain medication options.
  • Birth by Cesarean: indications, options for, prevention strategies.
  • Tips for communicating with care providers.



CLASS FOUR: THE AMAZING NEWBORN & BECOMING PARENTS


Topics Covered:


  • Physical and emotional adjustments of the postpartum period .
  • Care of the newborn.
  • Newborn appearance.
  • Newborn Procedures.
  • Breastfeeding: Management (how often to nurse, etc.) , Solutions to Common Problems (i.e., sore nipples, etc.).
  • Pumping and handling  of Breastmilk.
  •  Father's  or Partner's Role in Supporting  Breastfeeding.
  •  Reducing risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: Two Approaches.
  • Promoting Parent-Infant  Attachment.
  • Potluck Dinner (class graduation).

Heart & Hands Maternity Concierge-Childbirth Preparation Classes

Classes meet as a group four week series for pregnant women and their birth partners. Sessions are three hours in length and are offered at our location. Fee is $350 per couple. Additional friends and family who are part of the birth support team may attend at no charge.


Private classes are customized to suit your schedule and are offered in your home or our location. Topics can be customized to suit your interests from above list of topics. Fee is: $900.00 for a 9 hour series (3 hours per session).
